Cycling to work has got more popular in Brighton and Hove over the last 10 years! The number of people living here who cycled to work increased by 109% according to the 2011 census results published today! Other notable increases were London (101%), Bristol (94%), Manchester (83%), Newcastle (81%) and Sheffield (80%). See more analysis by the Office of National Statistics at http://bit.ly/1pysUBj
The Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) to reduce speed limits to 20 mph on Preston Drove, Surrenden Road and Stanford Avenue have now been published, along with a couple of others that slipped through the process. It only takes a couple of minutes to give your support via a simple response form on the Council’s website or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org DEADLINE: 8th April 2014. The reference numbers are TRO-9b-2014 and TRO-9c-2014. You must give your full name and address. Tell the council that these roads are main routes to schools. 20 mph speed limits mean greater safety and a better environment for healthy walking and cycling.
People without web access can write to the Executive Director Environment, Development & Housing, Brighton & Hove City Council, Hove Town Hall, Room 323, Norton Road, Hove, BN3 3BQ, following the points above. Deadline 8th April 2014. Spread the word!
Shed that lethargy! The new ‘Shed Rides’ are aimed at those slightly reluctant cyclists who have a bike buried under plant pots and half empty pots of paint somewhere in the garden shed! Organiser Howie Blanks said “We recognise that many people are put off cycling because of lack of confidence, traffic or perhaps worried about having to cycle too far out of their comfort zone. If you join one of our rides, you do so, safe in the knowledge that a Shed Bike Ride is over a shorter distance, generally on cycle paths and at a very comfortable pace, led by experienced cyclists.”
Weather permitting, the first ‘Shed Ride’ is on Sunday, January 5th 2014. See:
