Have your say on active travel improvements

Consultation is open on four new schemes to make walking and cycling in our city safer. You can respond until 14 March on the council’s website. By responding, you can show your support for better cycling infrastructure.

The survey is quite long but you can save it and go back to it later. Read our recommendations for filling it out in the bullets below.

Western Road

This scheme aims to simplify the road layout, resurface the road and improve pedestrian crossings, between the Clock Tower and Montpellier Street. We suggest strongly supporting these proposals. However:
  • Cyclists need to be kept separate from other traffic by Churchill Square, where high numbers of buses deter many people from cycling.
  • Parking on double-yellow lines, pavement parking and double parking is endemic along Western Road. It makes the road dangerous for walking and cycling and holds up the flow of traffic. Protected cycle lanes would solve this problem – or at least bollards and increased enforcement.

Preston Circus to Patcham Roundabout (A23)

An upgrade to the exisiting cycle lanes is proposed, with safer junctions and better protection from traffic. We suggest strongly supporting these proposals.

  • The council also wants your opinion on the existing cycle network between Argyle Road and Providence Place. This route diverts cyclists away from the A23. While this more lengthy route may be useful for some, the most direct route needs to be safe for cycling – a principle laid down in last year’s Gear Change document from the government. This means we need fully-protected cycle lanes on the whole of the A23.

Old Shoreham Road (A270) temporary cycle lanes

The existing temporary cycle lanes between The Drive and Carlton Terrace would be extended further westward to Applesham Road. The scheme also contains improvements to junctions around Olive Road and an end to the gap in protection by Hove Park. We strongly support this proposal as the A270 is almost unusuable for cycling without protected lanes.

  • There is also a proposal for a short stretch of protected lanes on part of Neville Road, to service schools. We agree, but believe the lanes should go further north, at least as far as Waitrose. Despite the 20mph limit, speeding is widespread, providing a hostile environment for walking and cycling.
  • Key feeder routes to the Old Shoreham Road, including Sackville Road, Olive Road and Carlton Terrace/Station Road/Boundary Road, are currently dangerous for cycling, due to road layout, surfacing and the positioning of parking bays. These roads need to be urgently dealt with.

Seafront (A259) temporary cycle lanes

The current temporary cycle lanes between West Street and Fourth Avenue would be extended westwards to Glendor Road. We support the scheme, with several provisos.

  • Betwen Fourth Avenue and Hove Street, the proposal is for the new on-street route to be westbound in front of the King Alfred Leisure Centre, while the existing seafront route would be eastbound only. We think this split is a bad idea, as it provides a direct route westbound and an indirect route eastbound, while vehicle traffic would be direct both ways. As a result, both routes may end up becoming unofficially two-way, which would be dangerous for people cycling and walking. We’d like to see this stretch officially two-way along the A259, with the existing seafront route maintained as an alternative.
  • We’d like to see King’s Esplanade (the seafront by Marocco’s) closed to motor vehicles except residents, deliveries and blue badge holders, with parking removed. This is a popular part of the seafront, and the current layout doesn’t leave enough space for people.
  • The proposal for bus stops to be situated in the cycle lane is dangerous for bus users and cyclists. We’d like to see floating bus stops, like those on the Lewes Road.
  • The stretch of the A259 between Glendor Road and Boundary Road is currently dangerous for cycling and needs to be made safe.
