Two cyclists die in Brighton and Hove during July

Sadly there have been two cycling-related deaths in Brighton and Hove this month.

David Hanna, 18, from Whitehawk, fell and hit his head on the road. He spent six days in a specialist brain injury unit before dying early on Tuesday 6th. The Cardinal Newman pupil was cycling without a helmet in Haybourne Road at about 4.45pm on Wednesday June 30th when he is believed to have lost control and fallen off, suffering serious head injuries. No other cars are thought to have been involved. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to contact them on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Ingworth.

Joanna Walters,28, from Hove, was cycling near the underpass in Lewes Road when she was struck by a delivery van at around midday on Tuesday 13th July. The University of Brighton student died of her injuries. The van driver was unhurt. Joanna was a keen cyclist and was rarely without her bike. Enquiries are continuing and anyone who saw the collision is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70999 quoting Operation Brookhill.

Our condolences go out to both cyclists’ friends and families. A foundation and charity cycle ride are being set up in Joanna’s memory, we will provide further information on this as it becomes available.
