New off-road cycle route linking Barnham and Bognor Regis

Work on the route – to be
called the Barnham Link – started on 5 November and will be
completed early in the new year.

The route runs from Church
Lane, Barnham, and follows a series of public footpaths to Hoe
Lane at Flansham on the outskirts of Bognor Regis. It will cross
the Lidsey Rife, via an existing steel bridge, which is to be
improved by the addition of ramps to accommodate wheelchairs,
and electric buggies as well as cycles. The final connection to
Downview Road, Bognor Regis, will be constructed later at the
same time as the Bognor Regis Relief Road.

The length of the traffic
free cycle route will be around 7 kilometres – several
kilometres less than the current road routes that include the
winding Lidsey Bends on the A29 and the Comet Corner junction on
the A259.

The scheme marks the end of a
long campaign by local County Councillor Derek Whittington, a
former Chairman of Eastergate Parish Council, and keen cyclist.
He is a Policy Advisor to Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West
Sussex Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, a role that
includes being the County Council’s ‘Member Cycling Champion.’

Derek said: “I am looking
forward to riding the new route on a regular basis, and will be
doing all I can to promote it in the 6-Village area. (Barnham,
Eastergate, Westergate, Aldingbourne, Walberton and Slindon). It
will provide a link for cyclists with Barnham train station,
which is a main junction for services to Portsmouth, Brighton,
and through the Arun Valley to London."

The scheme is designed to
give greater access to the countryside and also encourage people
who commute to work by car to switch to a more environmentally
friendly method of transport.
