South Downs recommended as National Park

Bricycles welcomes the news that the inspector in the South
Downs National Park inquiry has recommended that the South Downs
become England’s 10th national park.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
will be restarting the national park designation process with a
6 week consultation commencing on 2 July. The process has been
on hold since February 2006.

However, the South Downs Campaign (SDC) is very concerned if the
possible alternative boundary between Petersfield and Pulborough
led to areas within the Low Weald and settlements such as
Petersfield, Liss, Midhurst and Petworth being excluded from the
national park. The SDC is strongly opposed to any loss of
protection for this area.

Bricycles is a member of the South Downs Campaign
– the umbrella organisation working for the best best national
park.
