North Street Quadrant to reopen?

Jenny Rowlands,
Director of Environment has replied to a letter from the Chair
of Brighton & Hove City Cycling Forum which requested the
immediate reopening of North Street Quadrant to cycles.

David Brindley’s
letter, dated 25 Jan 07, to Alan McCarthy, Chief Executive BHCC
and to the Leader of the Council, Simon Burgess (Labour) said
that this popular access route should be restored as a matter of
urgency.

In her
response, dated 19 Feb 07, Ms Rowlands says "A new permanent
layout is under consideration and will be designed in
co-ordination with some significant road safety improvements
that are planned at the Clock Tower junction. As part of the new
design, which will of course be subject to a satisfactory safety
audit, it is currently proposed that the Quadrant will provide a
‘shared space’ for cyclists and pedestrians, so that cyclists
will not have to make the turn around the Clock Tower, as they
do at present.

It is also
intended that the improvements that will be carried out here
will also be coordinated with the current programme of utilities
works (water and gas main replacements) in the area. This will
minimise the disruption to people and traffic, thus ensuring
efficient use of resources, and mean that implementation of the
changes at the junction are likely to begin during 2008."

Bricycles and
Brighton & Hove CTC consider any delay in the reopening of North
Street Quadrant unacceptable. On safety grounds it should be
reopened now!
